Today, we dive deep into Korea's vibrant culture, experiencing life as a traditional Korean. From savoring delicious cold noodles to exploring historical landmarks, this journey is all about immersing ourselves in the rich heritage of South Korea.

Greetings, dear viewers! I’m Bilal Azam, and you’re watching my channel, Being a Traveler. Our South Korea series kicks off right here in the bustling capital, Seoul. Initially, I had planned to stay in a hostel, but thanks to a wonderful follower, Tayyab Rajput, I’ve had a more personal experience at his home. His hospitality included a hearty breakfast of parathas, sharatha, and omelet, setting the tone for a fantastic day ahead.

A Glimpse into Korea's History

As we set out, it’s essential to understand the history of this remarkable country. Korea’s past is rich and complex, starting with the Gojoseon dynasty in the first century BC. This was followed by the Goryeo Dynasty in 910 AD, which unified the region we now know as Korea. The subsequent Joseon Dynasty, beginning in 1392, lasted until 1910, when Japan occupied Korea.

Interestingly, the name 'Korea' evolved from 'Goryeo', which was used during the Goryeo Dynasty. The Korean language, Hangul, was established during the Joseon period and is often praised for its phonetic simplicity. It’s fascinating how the language corresponds closely to the mouth's movements when pronouncing each word.

Experiencing the Royal Palace

After our history lesson, we head to a royal palace, a stunning example of 14th-century architecture. Here, we witness the traditional guard-changing ceremony, reminiscent of similar ceremonies in other cultures, such as the Mughal Empire. The guards, dressed in intricate attire, showcase the historical significance of their roles, standing proudly in front of the palace.

The architecture is nothing short of breathtaking, featuring colorful decorations and intricate designs that reflect the artistic heritage of Korea. Many tourists flock here, eager to capture the essence of this historical site.

Becoming a Traditional Korean

One of the highlights of the day is dressing up in traditional Korean attire. Renting a hanbok allows us to step into the shoes of royalty, experiencing a slice of Korean culture firsthand. The process of getting dressed is quite elaborate, especially for women, while it’s relatively straightforward for men.

The hanbok rental includes various styles, from vibrant colors to elegant designs. I chose a striking red outfit, feeling immediately connected to the culture. It's a unique experience that many tourists indulge in, and the joy of wearing these traditional garments is palpable.

Walking Through Bukchon Hanok Village

After our royal experience, we stroll towards Bukchon Hanok Village, a well-preserved area showcasing traditional Korean houses. The village is alive with history, and as we walk through its narrow streets, we can almost hear the echoes of the past. The houses, known as hanoks, are a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the Joseon era.

As we wander, the blend of ancient structures and modern cafes creates a unique atmosphere. The locals maintain their homes with pride, and many have transformed parts of their houses into shops and tea houses, inviting visitors to experience Korean hospitality.

Sampling Korean Cuisine

No cultural exploration is complete without indulging in local cuisine. Today, we try cold buckwheat noodles, a dish that’s quite different from what we’re used to. The noodles are served in a chilled broth with various toppings like cucumber, radish, and boiled egg. This refreshing dish is surprisingly delightful, especially on a warm day.

Accompanying our meal is kimchi, a staple in Korean cuisine known for its spicy kick. Each restaurant offers a unique twist on this classic dish, showcasing the diversity of flavors within Korean food. It's a culinary adventure that keeps surprising us!
