Landing in South Korea marked my 31st country visited, and I couldn't have been more excited. The airport experience was seamless, with immigration being straightforward and hassle-free. As I stepped out, the first sights of Seoul greeted me, showcasing the towering buildings that define the city’s skyline. Although it was nighttime and the local halal food market wasn’t very visible, I was thrilled to spot the familiar taste of home in the form of Pakistani cuisine available in the area.

Departure from Lahore

My journey began early in the morning at Lahore Airport. Arriving just in time for Fajr, the check-in process was swift, and the Qatar Airways staff welcomed us warmly. I was pleasantly surprised to see familiar faces among the Qatar crew, who had been there for several years, including my friend Vikas who assisted me during boarding.

Our first leg of the journey was a flight to Doha, Qatar. During the flight, I had to share that I was dealing with a kidney stone issue, which added a layer of concern to my travels. Nevertheless, I was determined to make the most out of this trip.

Innovative Flight Experience

Onboard Qatar Airways, I was amazed by a new feature: the electronic window shades. Instead of traditional covers, there were buttons that allowed me to adjust the brightness of the window. This unique technology fascinated me as I played with the settings, transitioning from bright light to a darkened view with just a press of a button.

Layover in Doha

Upon arriving at Doha Airport, I found myself with a lengthy 15-hour layover. I remembered my previous visits where I was allowed to explore the city, so I checked if that option was available this time. Unfortunately, I was advised against leaving the airport due to my current circumstances.

To pass the time, I took advantage of the airport’s amenities. I had access to a luxurious business lounge courtesy of my MasterCard, which provided a variety of complimentary food and drinks. I indulged in delicious meals and relaxed in a sleeping lounge equipped with cozy pods for a quick nap.

Exploring Doha Airport

Doha Airport is impressive, featuring numerous high-end shops and a beautiful indoor garden that resembles a park. I wandered through this oasis, taking in the serene atmosphere, which contrasted sharply with the bustling airport environment. The facilities available made it easy to spend my long layover comfortably.

Arrival in Seoul

Finally, the time came to board my flight to Seoul. The excitement was palpable as we approached Incheon Airport. The weather was lovely, with a light drizzle that added to the charm of my arrival. The airport itself is stunning, comparable to Singapore's Changi Airport, boasting modern design and extensive amenities.

The immigration process in South Korea was a breeze. I was surprised at how quickly and efficiently the officers processed passengers, with minimal questions asked. They swiftly scanned my passport and visa, granting me a three-month entry, which was a pleasant surprise.

Currency Exchange and First Impressions

Once through immigration, I exchanged a small amount of currency at the airport. The South Korean won was now in my hands, and I was eager to explore. The smallest denomination is 1,000 won, and I learned that the larger notes, like the 50,000 won bill, are called "Oman".

As I stepped out of the airport, I was greeted by my friend Khuram, who had kindly come to pick me up. We exchanged pleasantries as we made our way to the car, and I couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement about my new surroundings.

Exploring Itaewon: The Heart of Halal Food

Our first stop was Itaewon, known for its vibrant multicultural scene and halal food options. As we drove through the city, I marveled at the modern architecture and bustling streets. Itaewon is home to numerous halal restaurants, and I was eager to try some local flavors.

We arrived at the Central Mosque of Seoul, which stood as a beacon for the local Muslim community. Although the mosque was undergoing renovations, it was still a beautiful sight. The area surrounding the mosque was filled with halal food shops and restaurants, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

Dinner at Punjab Restaurant

After exploring the mosque, we decided to grab a bite at Punjab Restaurant, a place known for its authentic Pakistani cuisine. The aroma of freshly baked naan and spicy mutton curry filled the air as we entered. I was thrilled to indulge in familiar flavors after a long journey.

The mutton was succulent, and the spices reminded me of home. I shared my thoughts with Khuram, who enjoyed the meal just as much. It was comforting to find a piece of Pakistan in the heart of Seoul.

Challenges with SIM Card Acquisition

After our meal, we attempted to get a local SIM card for my phone. However, we arrived at the mobile shop just as they were closing, which was unfortunate. The shopkeeper informed us that their systems shut down at 8 PM, leaving me without a means to connect to the internet for the night.

Despite this minor setback, I was excited to continue my adventure. Khuram was a great host, and I appreciated his efforts to show me around and make my arrival as smooth as possible.

Settling into My Hostel

As the night progressed, we made our way to my hostel. I booked a budget-friendly accommodation in Hongdae, a lively area known for its nightlife and youthful energy. The hostel was simple but comfortable, and I was eager to settle in and rest after a long day of travel.

The fare was reasonable, especially for a city like Seoul, where prices can vary greatly. I was prepared for a few more nights in different accommodations, as the weekends tend to bring higher prices.

Looking Ahead

As I wrapped up my first day in South Korea, I felt a mix of excitement and curiosity about what was to come. I planned to explore Seoul more, visit cultural sites, and immerse myself in the local community. My journey had just begun, and I was looking forward to sharing my experiences with all of you.

Stay tuned for more adventures in this vibrant city, where I aim to capture the essence of Korean culture while connecting with fellow travelers and locals alike.
